The Government of India Act

In 1931, the British Government gathered in what they called the Second Round table conference. Gandhi also attended this gathering after he was chosen to represent India at a Session called Karachi. The Karachi was set up as a memorable plan for guaranteeing the basic and fundamental rights to all of the Indian people, also for the new National Economic plan. This plan benefited the welfare of workers and peasants. During the Second Round table meeting all the present members agreed to release all the political leaders that were currently in jail. They also suggested to put an end to the Civil Disobedience Movement. But, the members couldn't come to a basic agreement therefore the movement was revived again. Gandhi was one of the few leaders arrested for this movement and so gradually it just died out. Then in 1933 if was officially called to an end and Gandhi withdrew from active politics.

In 1932 the Third Round Table conference was held. This was when the Government of India Act was passed by the British parliament. This set up a basis for a solely Indian Federation and established a new system for governing on the basis of provincial autonomy. So in July 1937 in turned out that Congress dominated the poll in seven out of the eleven provinces. But the Muslims weren't so fortunate and gained less than a quarter of the seats they were expecting to have.

From 1937-1939 something called the Congress Ministry was set up so they could help the social welfare of the people and release political prisoners and promote civil liberties. The Ministry was set up in a good cause but their achievements were scarce due to the limitations of the Act of 1935.

This system of limited democracy gave the Muslims a feeling of wanting to be separated from the rest of India. But their efforts were a failure during the next elections. Jinha, the Muslim leader and president, started false rumors that the Hindu majority was dominating the Muslim minorities and they were in danger. From this rumor he cleverly proposed his idea of having two separate nations.
